100 Degrees: An environmentalist story

“And it used to snow every winter, Emma, every winter. Back then.”
“I don't believe you. I've never seen this 'snow' you keep talking about,” she said, weaving the quotation marks into her voice. “My teachers haven't even seen it. And some of them are your age.”
Mom chuckled. “I can imagine.” She sighed, and ruffled my hair. “The only reason I've ever seen snow is because when I was your age, my parents took me to a mountain top. That was the only place that snow still existed, back then.” She looked into space, as if she could see the scene, but far away. “But when Gramom was just about your age, it snowed every single winter. It was much colder then.”
I pouted, and slumped over on the couch. It seemed so exciting to have little flakes of ice swirling around you, all white and soft, and then that big blanket of millions of those flakes on the ground...just like in those old, old movies, where Christmas and Hanukkah and Kwanzaa were covered with that icy white blanket. I think there was one -- what was it called? -- Home Alone, that was it! Christmas with snow. Even a cold Christmas was impossible to imagine. A Christmas that wasn't just like springtime...
I wished I could see this “snow”. But mom said that there was none left at all anymore, not even on the mountain tops. She said that it disappeared completely about ten years after they went to the mountains.
“But how? If it was as wonderful and glorious and...especially...as irreplaceable as everyone said it was, then wouldn't anyone try to keep the world cool?”
She sighed again. “I think they did. But the people with the power, like the presidents and people in the government, well, most of them...just didn't care enough.”
Stupid. I thought. Stupid, stupid, stupid . Who would be stupid enough to think that we wouldn't care? That we wouldn't make a fuss about, well, I don't know, one of the world's greatest phenomena disappearing into thin air?
“Huh,” I said. It was all I could say. Nothing seemed to make sense about that snow. Mom put so much detail into her description of snow that I could start to believe it, but I still didn't like the idea that the people who were ruling our world -- our presidents, prime ministers, and, well, everyone else that really had a say in anything -- didn't care about something as huge as the disappearing of snow. Didn't they have enjoyment, too? Didn't they also love the snow? Or were they really just all business?
The next day at school, I came in, and having been elected as class president the day before, wrote on the board 9/8/2208. Why couldn't I just write '08? I thought. It's not like anyone thinks it's 2008.

WHO KNOWS? This could be the actual, real-life, honest-to-goodness scenario of a girl some 200 years from now. Do we want it to be? You decide. Your decision can make a difference if you try.

HI! It's nice to see you again! Will you continue this story? It's really good! For constructive critism, I think you should make the words a bit bigger, was just saying... Anyway, how are you? It's been a long time...How was John Hopkins?

i really luv this story! did u make it up urself? how did u get ur idea? also, i agree with priscilla. it was really good, except u really need to make ur words a tad bit bigger. no one posted for any of my posts though. i thought that was unfair. but still.
also, i really need help making up a story myself. it's about the 1st four presidents. make something up. and it doesn't have to be something that really happened. for example: george washington is a baker and he went to war because of lacking cream cheese. well, that was the worst of my ideas, so if u have any better ones, that would be helpful.

Hey, what's up annapurna? i've been going through this whole ENTIRE blog. Pretty awesome. I love pandas! You should continue on this piece. It's a good story.La, la la! Pandas rule! Cookies rock! I'm a bird...

Nice, Flora. Ok. When u guys say make my words bigger, do you mean the font size?

Jill said...

for the poll on 7th grade being better than 6th, well, 7th grade is going to be more fun, but it well be harder, and the midterms r like 5 days long, so u should specify. but usually, the next grade up is better than the previous ones, so i vote better.

Dawn Uzumaki said...

How do you vote for the polls? And I think 7th grade is going to be way hard. I barely made through 6th grade alive! And Jill, what do you mean I never posted comments on your posts? I thought I did...
:( All well...I guess it's okay that you would consider my side stories as not comments...but didn't Priya comment your posts?

~Kaori
~P.S: Dawn Uzumaki and Princess Crystal aren't here today, they are working on the story...if you were really wondering...that's what happened, they are the ones making the story, I am not really there cause' well you'll find out...

Jill said...

i didn't mean that they weren't stories, but i mean that i wrote about 5 posts before the one that u commented, and no one commented on any of them, so i was assuming that no one read them. they r still pretty new...

Jill said...

write another story.

Dawn Uzumaki said...

You want me to write ANOTHER story? NO ONE is even reading the first one, and it kind of discourages me...I ALREADY have an idea, but should I write it? I was saving it for Sanjana, dedicating it to her cause' it's a fiction story not fantasy. So I WANT to finish this story first because it is due on Chirstmas for my cousin's Chirstmas present. I was supposed to make a '1,000 paged' novel but I decided against it... Anyway, after I finish this one, I'll make the fiction one, both for you and Sanjana.

last comment (suggestion): put something about the olympics and china has the lead in the gold medal count (with 26) and second in overall medal count (with 44)! woo! USA places first in overall medal count(with 50) thanks to phelps winning them a medal a day(now a total of 7 gold medals, tied with spitz's world record. last medal is in the 400m relay) and now that track and field is comming up, USA is gonna dominate. but chinas doing good in diving, shooting, badminton, tennis, etc. =) go olympics!

am i the only one whos not a blogger here?

Dawn Uzumaki said...

Wow! Mer, you're hyper, maybe more than Priya... Anyway, when you log into Google to put up a comment there should be 'mer' [link] and when you click it you should go to your blog profile. There you can click on your 'picture' of that picture and you change the picture to anything you want that you SAVED onto the computer.
ALSO! And lastly, yeah, no more side stories on anyone's blog...sorry... I got 51 pages for my fanfiction, but since of the room, you can call it 50! It's such accomplishement for me cause' I am not a REAL author and haven't sold any books...All well I have to finish by October so I can publish it and give it to my cousin (s) I am not sure if that will be my Chirstmas gift because two of them don't exactly like reading! :( So maybe I'll keep it down to 2...What do you think?

if u guys don't mind me asking (and don't call me stupid for this...) who the heck is "mer"? and also, if u r apart of a blog, u go to the dashboard and u go to edit profile, and u can put a pic in it that u saved onto ur computer. no using my picture. it is beautiful and no one else deserves it except for me! (kidding. but i don't want anyone using it. not that u'll ever find it on the internet because it's so big... )oh well....dot...dot...dots...r....cool...

Dawn Uzumaki said...

WOW! Jill, didn't I just tell Mer that? Anyway, the weird thing is, you guys get more comments than I do... And mine has more content, I think... SHESH! Maybe I should give out a chainmail because my blog isn't getting any bigger than 1 comment per 1 month. This time, there is no signature.

mer? you no know mer? -sniff sniff- mer feels sad. wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!! yep. mer's sad alright. cuz mer is HAPPY!HAPPYHAPPYHAPPYHAPPY. mer still sad that jill no know mer. humph. =( dude, you shoulda gotten a hint through my comments that
1) im in your grade
2) i know what the MAP test is so i most probably live in your township
3) i was supporting china (and maybe USA too) in that olympic bit that i posted...so im obviously somewhat chinese

now, lets play the guessing game!whoever guesses correctly first is a good guesser!

Dawn Uzumaki said...

AHH! I'm sorry Mer, too. I don't know who you are...Is your first name 'Emily'? And do you live in NJ? I know exactly 4 Emilys' so I thought you might be one of them...Just guessing. Later, Mer! Wish to get your email! :D

everyone here knows me pricsilla, and you also have my email too. so lets go over the clues again:

1) im in your grade
2) i know what the MAP test is so i most probably live in your township
3) i was supporting china (and maybe USA too) in that olympic bit that i posted...so im obviously somewhat chinese

any other guesses before i reveal myself?

Jill said...

well, my guess is that u would be emily cai, though u used to refer urself as 'mc'. but usually u aren't *that* hyper... (hyper is supposed to be in bold...)my second guesss is that u r flora, but flora actually posts her comments as 'flora'and she lives in california.
u could be alina or cindy, but neithe of them have ever been on this blog, so i highly doubt that. though it is possible.
my last guess is jenny. though she is in china right now, and she always will be (:() but she could be mer because she was here for maps, and did live in this township, and she is in our grade, so it could possibly her.

which one r u?

Jill said...

also...
SERIOUSLY! no one has commented on my posts. i feel unimportant. i wrote about the tales of desperaux, beach soccer, jeremy fink and the meaning of life, walk two moons, and homecoming. all of my hard work was wasted... *sniff sniff*

Anonymous said...

nobody else wants to guess? ah well. i shall reveal myself. i am...(sound effects) yeah...what jill and priscilla first said. and what do you mean....jenny moved to china? wow...im behind. i think ill just go around changing my identity. i have a good one already...=P

Dawn Uzumaki said...

You mean...you're Emily! :D But which one? I have two people that might be you, Emily Lai or Emily Cai... Emily McKinnon and Emily Rembert doesn't have the blog address... Also, Emily, how did you know it was me? And Jill, Emily is like ALWAYS hyper.

Jill said...

i know that emily suffocates when she laughs, but she is not the jenny type of hyper or the flora or the priya. but if u say so then that's fine. also, how do u not know that jenny moved to china? that's why everyone was so sad on the last day of school. let me test your behinness. am i in china or not? well, i kinda gave it away, but if u i didn't send u an email about it, then i should have. but if i didn't, i'm pretty sure that if u were chatting with a few people then u would know.

also, next time there's a new person on this blog, then i am going to say 'emily, stick with one identity, and get on with life'

not to husrt ur feelings...

Dawn Uzumaki said...

Hey, Jill, what happened to your keyboard? Your writing is all messy and I can understand most of it, barely. Joking. And yeah, you kind of gave it away mostly by the time that you commented, I meant, who would go in the computer in the first hours of day?
~Kaori
P.S: Mer, how did you know it was me? Was it because you read my comments? Also see if you can go onto my blog: www.dawnsstar.blogspot.com/
I'm low on comments... :(

Anonymous said...

yes jill, you are in china, sent me an email on that one. and i know kaori was priscilla based on some context clues in the first few comments.

Dawn Uzumaki said...

Wow...I never knew I left so many clues...OH well...Especially the first comment about the Tale of Desperaux...I said something like, 'It's not a bunny, but I'll live.' LOL I have changed over the summer by a lot...But not enough to become a girly-girl. :D Sorry you guys...But my love 4 bunnies have been teared away from me...
<3 bunny lover is gone... And is now broken hearted.

uhhh...who is anonymous?

Unknown said...

idk, but how could mer be ME?
I'm....Flora!
oh and i think 7th grade will be better because for once, i'll be the oldest in the school. ( my school is 6-7th grade)
YAY! and i can pick on those little itty bitty 6th graders.
I'm sorry if this is offending anyone but all the 6th graders are small, puny, and about 3 ft tall. I'm like...5'3?
That's a 2 ft and 3 inch difference.
Also, 7th grade will be better because Varun will finally leave me alone...he's at windequeer.( square dancing in 5th grade...blech)
I have a history quarter final manana. better get a good night sleep. i'm the only girl in that class. it sucks 2 b me.
Anyhow, bye.
